Harvest Thanksgiving

All Age Service

10.30 am Sunday 28 September 2008

Harvest seems remote to modern life in a town or city. Our food comes already prepared and packed from a large supermarket. Fruit and veg all so uniform in shape and size, you wonder if it can be real. All nicely presented, with looks taking precedence over genuine quality. And we take it all for granted, without stopping to think about where it comes from.

Only following bad weather, or some other farming problem, which results in shortages causing price increases, do we remember where our food comes. Or realise that some things are outside our control.

Harvest is a time we give thanks to God for all that he provides.

Traditional harvest hymn

Come ye thankful people, come,

Raise the song of harvest home!

All is safely gathered in

Ere the winter storms begin;

God, our Maker, doth provide

For our needs to be supplied:

Come to God's own temple, come,

Raise the song of harvest-home.

Henry Alford, 1810-71
